Memory Foam Vs. Spring Mattresses

Memory Foam Mattresses vs. Traditional Spring Mattresses

The memory foam mattress is the mattress of the modern era and the spring mattress can be considered the standard mattress. In fact it was the only type of mattress available to the average income group earlier.   Memory foam mattresses have been around for the last 20 years, but have only become affordable in the last 10 years. The cost of a spring mattress is still much lower than a memory foam mattress.  Spring mattresses are durable but quite firm.  Memory foam mattresses become flexible with body heat and your body receives support as you get cradled in.  Nevertheless, memory foam should give your body a firm feeling because your body weight gets evenly distributed.

A good mattress should not only distribute your body weight evenly but give you comfort and pain relief. That is what a good quality memory foam mattress does.  It helps to reduce the pressure points to a great extent, which leads to no tossing and turning at night and in turn that leads to a good night’s sleep.  A spring mattress on the other hand does not give any pressure point relief.  All the springs push against your body with equal force, but the body in turn cannot push evenly.  Proper support does not occur and the result is poor blood circulation and aches and joint pain.

It is important to maintain spring mattresses, as they begin to sag after about two years.  They offer a maximum 10 year warranty.  The springs offer no support for back or spinal alignment.  No maintenance is required for memory foam mattresses, but if the memory foam is of a poor quality, it takes longer to conform to your body and recover.

The basic difference between a spring mattress and a memory foam mattress is the difference in total body support.  Temperature sensitivity is another difference.  A memory foam mattress has the ability to respond to different temperatures.  This means that it remains firm or it becomes soft according to the temperature of your body, which it can sense. It then absorbs your heat and softens up and you are left with a warm cozy feeling. A spring mattress cannot react to your body heat at all.

The comfort level on a memory foam mattress is very high.  When you sit or sleep on a memory foam mattress, the memory foam simply ‘melts’ under you and you enjoy long-term balanced support and comfort. Coil spring mattresses are made from coils and they are not always accommodating to your body when you lie down.

Isn’t it better to invest your money in a quality mattress which provides you with sound sleep and no maintenance for at least 10 years?  An average person spends 30 % of his life sleeping, and hence it is important to use a healthy and accurate mattress.  The best support and comfort while sleeping is important for people of all ages, whether they are babies, young children, adults or the elderly.
